Obituary: Betty Laura (Jackson) Sholl

Obituary: Betty Laura (Jackson) Sholl

Betty Laura (Jackson) Sholl, long-time resident of The Dalles, Oregon, died in her sleep on July 13, 2021, at Flagstone Senior Living in The Dalles. She was 94.

Betty and her twin, Dorothy, were born January 10, 1927, in Lansing, Michigan to parents Frederic and Mary Jackson, joining older siblings Helen and Arthur. On February 27, 1927, Betty was baptized as a child of God at Emmanuel First Lutheran Church in Lansing, Michigan, and then later, around age 13, was confirmed in her Lutheran faith and received her first Holy Communion. After completing her education, she and Dorothy worked at the Lansing State Police Department.

On September 20, 1950, Betty married Maurice (Maury) Sholl in Lansing. In their early years, they lived in Ohio, where their four children were born. In 1957, the young family moved cross-country to the Tieton Ranger Station near White Pass, Washington. Moves followed to Portland, Oregon in 1967 then, finally to The Dalles in 1973. In 2006, after 55 years of love and adventure, Maury died. Betty continued

her life journey with the support of her loving family.

Betty, a devoted wife, mother, and master homemaker had wide-ranging interests and legendary determination. Betty was blessed with impressive skills in quilting, knitting, sewing, embroidery, applique, and wallpapering and won numerous blue ribbons at the Wasco County Fair. She gardened, canned, decorated, created a welcoming home and enjoyed entertaining. Memories of luscious pot roasts, corn pudding, homemade pies and other delicacies will linger in the minds of those who sat around her table. She enjoyed extensive travels with Maury and was always ready to make a puzzle, play board games, savor a glass of wine and indulge herself with some chocolate. Betty's faith guided her throughout her lifetime – she loved her church. She was head cook at church camp for many years, which she loved. She and Maury were on the planning committee for the current Bethany Lutheran Church. Following strict parameters, Betty hand-stitched and embroidered all the

altar paraments which are used every Sunday. She loved singing in the choir, was famous for her sauerkraut and sausage at church pot-lucks and loved supplying roses from her garden to adorn the altar.

Betty and Maury joined The Dalles Country Club in 1974 developing lifetime friendships. Betty volunteered at Mid-Columbia Medical Center for 45 years. After years as a regular member of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce, Betty was named an honorary lifetime member in 2008. She also generously supported numerous local causes.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, all her siblings,in-laws, and grandson Ryan Sholl.

She is survived by her children, Daniel A. Sholl of Guanajuato, Mexico, Margaret E. Atchison and husband Kim of The Dalles, Jeanne A. Tindall and husband Scott of Albany, Oregon, Gwendolyn J. Sholl and Karin Jackson of Corvallis, Oregon; grandchildren, Felix Herrada and wife Laurel, Gresham, Oregon, Camille Sarder and husband Mahmud, New York, New York, Natasha Pineda and husband Jose, Anchorage, Alaska, Rory Sholl, Portland, Oregon, Evan Michaels and wife Kelly, Andover, Massachusetts, Keith Michaels and wife Kyung-hwa, Ephraim, Utah, Vanessa Michaels, Denver, Colorado; great grandchildren, William and Natalie Herrada, Eva, Aden and Adrian Sarder, Sofia and

Cruz Pineda, Micaila and Lorelei Michaels, and Sebin Michaels.

Public viewing will be available at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home on Friday, July 30th from 2:00-6:00 PM, the funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 31st at 10:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2323 E. 12th St., The Dalles, Oregon, graveside committal will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery/ Parklawn Cemetery, 2565 Three Mile Road, The Dalles, Oregon.

A luncheon back at the church will follow the burial.  All are welcome to gather at Betty's home at the close of events at 2625 E. 15th, The Dalles, Oregon.

In lieu of flowers, Betty requested remembrances be made to Bethany Lutheran Church Building Fund, a cause dear to both her and Maury.

His brother Lee and sister Louise later joined the family. Other than short stints in Usk WA, Portland OR, and military service, Allen had lived on Lacey Drive nearly all his life. Maybe not the same house, but on Lacey Drive.

Allen attended Pine Grove School and graduated from Hood River High School in June of 1944. October 19, 1944 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the 5th Marine Division during WWII and later in the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War being honorably discharged January 26, 1952 with the rank of Sergeant. Allen worked in the family orchard beginning at an early age, helping out wherever he could. When his parents retired in the early 1970’s Allen and June along with Pat, Bruce and Beth acquired their interest in Moore Orchards, Inc. Following in Earl and Mary’s footsteps, all of them continued the family tradition of being active members of the Pine Grove Community, Hood River County as well as the State of Oregon.

Allen started his volunteer and service career early on as a member of the Pine Grove Grange where he was actively involved for over 70 years. Benefits from his service were garnered by the Hood River County School Board, Hood River County Fair Board, Oregon Fair Commission, Mid-Columbia Production Credit Association, Interstate Production Credit Association, Oregon State Fair and Exposition, Hood River Supply Association, Crystal Springs, Hood River Soil and Water Conservation District, Hood River County Chamber of Commerce and Pine Grove Methodist Church Board of Trustees. He served as President of the Oregon Horticulture Society and served as a Hood River County Commissioner from 1986 to 1994.

Allen was recognized as a leader in the tree fruit industry with awards from the Hood River Grower-Shippers (Columbia Gorge Fruit Growers), he was inducted into the Oregon Agriculture Co-operative Hall of Fame, Oregon State University Diamond Pioneer Agriculture Achievement Registry and in 1989 Allen, June and family received recognition as the Oregon Outstanding Farm Family awarded by the Oregon Farm Bureau.

Allen is survived by his three children and their spouses, Patrick and Sue Moore, Bruce and Lynn Moore, and Beth and Matt Peters all of Hood River; his sister Louise Rickman of Wenatchee WA; his grandchildren Shanna Spring (James), Reka Sieverkropp (Tom), Tera Lindquist (Mike), Julie Dillingham (Josh), Jake Moore (Carrie), Jason Moore, Justin Moore (Erika), Alise Greening (Kyle) and Brian Peters (Danyelle); his great-grandchildren Michael Spring; Ryan, Austin (Alexus) and Weston Sieverkropp; Samantha and Miya Lindquist; Bailey Hammel (Phil), Gracee and Kloee Dillingham; Leona Foster; Maddie and Luke Peters; Koen and Makayla Moore; and his great-great grandchild Apollo Sieverkropp.
