Obituary: Jeffrey Bryan Miller

miller_20211004153814.jpg

Jeffrey Bryan Miller

Jeffrey Bryan Miller passed away on April 21st, 2019 in Umatilla County near Pendleton, Oregon.  Jeff was born on March 7, 1967, and was 54 years of age at the time of his passing.

Jeff was born in Portland, Oregon to Kenneth Verdon Miller and Janice Olivia (Monical).  He was born in Portland but spent the majority of his early years in The Dalles, Oregon where his father had moved the family to set up a chiropractic practice.  Jeff was a 1985 graduate of Wahtonka High School.

As kids, Jeff, and the neighborhood kids (including his brother, Craig) enjoyed exploring the wilderness areas near their childhood home and having amazing adventures.  From the beginning, Jeff was always very sensitive and good-natured.  He very much disliked conflict and would be the first to jump in and defuse a dangerous situation before if could spiral out of control.  Jeff loved the TV series Star Trek as a child, and it remained an enduring source of nostalgia during family visits.  Jeff had an extraordinary memory and could remember the names of people and even conversations that occurred decades prior.  He would jokingly refer to his memory as his “memory banks”.  He had a good sense of humor with an appreciation for the wacky and/pr absurd and loved to laugh.

Jeff was a very spiritual person and seemed to know his life path early on.  He developed a strong and personal connection with God and strove to live his life as selflessly as had Jesus.  Very much a live-and-let-live type, Jeff sought to live his own truth unapologetically.

Jeff is survived by his parents, brother, Craig; and four step-sisters, Sandy Byers, Baraga Herman, Karen Martell and Brenda Derryberry.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 at Life in Christ Center ( 3095 Cherry Heights Road, The Dalles, Oregon 97058)

Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center • Celilo Chapel 204 E. 4th Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058.

Obituary: Alonzo (Lonny) V. Smith

Obituary: Alonzo (Lonny) V. Smith

Alonzo (Lonny) V. Smith

Alonzo (Lonny) V. Smith

Alonzo (Lonny) V. Smith

Lonny-Baby.jpg

Alonzo (Lonny) V. Smith, 71, of Hood River, Oregon, released his spirit into the everlasting on September 20, 2021, after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Even after receiving the diagnosis that his form of cancer was terminal, Lonny continued as the same engaging person with the wonderful sense of humor he always had. To the end, he accepted his fate with dignity and grace.

Lonny was born on March 14, 1950, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He moved to Palmetto, Florida, with his family at the age of nine and moved to Hood River, Oregon, in 1997 to marry his wife, Pat.

Lonny graduated from Palmetto High School in Palmetto, Florida, and was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era. He then went on to receive his B.A. degree at Florida State University (making him “forever” a Seminole).  Subsequently, he received his master’s degree in criminology at Northeastern University in Boston and his law degree at Stetson University in St. Petersburg, Florida. Three bar exams later, he would become licensed to practice law in Florida, followed by Oregon and Washington.

His career, motivated by his desire to help the defenseless, began as a child abuse investigator in Florida. Subsequently, he practiced law for three decades. For much of that time, he practiced as a defense attorney in Oregon, representing primarily the indigent. He believed strongly in the idea that the most vulnerable among us and the most defenseless should have an advocate who would stand up for them and help them.

Lonny loved music, especially of the “Americana” variety. He enjoyed hiking, whether by himself or with good friends, and he possessed an expert’s knowledge of the trails around Mt Hood, Mt Adams, and places beyond. He was an excellent conversationalist, able to speak with anyone on just about any subject, and he was kind, thoughtful, and generous. More than anything else, he loved the times he spent talking with his son and grandchildren in Florida.

Lonny leaves behind his wife, Pat (Schoenleber) Case, his son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Sue Smith, and his grandchildren Colleen and Kayden Smith. He also leaves behind his four siblings, Rick and Mac Smith, Sharon Greene, and Robin Miller, all of Florida.

A celebration of life for Lonny will take place in the spring, after which his ashes will be spread along the trails that he loved the most.

Anyone interested in doing something in memory of Lonny should do so by donating to the charity of their choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031.

Obituary: Richard Gordon Traister

Richard Gordon Traister

Richard Gordon Traister

Richard Gordon Traister

Richard Gordon Traister

Richard Gordon Traister was born in April of 1940 in Portland Oregon to Gordon and Wilma Traister, joining 5-year-old sister Irene. He grew up in the Pleasant Valley community of Southeast Portland where he attended Pleasant Valley Grade School and then Gresham High School.

Richard Gordon Traister

Richard Gordon Traister

After his graduation in 1958, Richard joined the Oregon National Guard, serving in an artillery unit. He also began working as a switchman for Southern Pacific Railroad while continuing his education at Clark College in Vancouver and Portland State College.
In 1965 Richard married the love of his life, Judy Kozera. After buying a modest single-level home at auction during the leadup to construction of the I-205 freeway, they moved that house up the narrow tree-lined twists and turns of Barbara Welch Road to the topmost portion of the farm property where Richard was raised. Over the next 38 years Richard and Judy would work to transform the house into the home they would raise their children and welcome family into.
Their eldest daughter Trudi arrived in the chill of winter 1969, followed by twins Matthew and Melissa in the summer of 1971. Seeking new opportunities in the skilled trades, Richard left the railroad in 1973 to start the steamfitter/pipefitter apprenticeship program of UA Local 235 (later UA Local 290).

Over his career as a steamfitter, Richard worked on some of the Pacific Northwest’s largest infrastructure projects, including Bonneville and The Dalles Dams, and Nuclear Plants in addition to high-tech manufacturing companies. He was also a highly-regarded instructor, teaching specialized skills to construction teams visiting from outside the United States. Richard retired in 2002 as a journeyman steamfitter/pipefitter/welder working primarily with Harder Mechanical Contractors.
In retirement, Richard and Judy indulged their love of travel with excursions around Europe, Russia and their beloved Scandinavia. In addition to their international adventures, they were often on the move exploring the U.S. on numerous road trips, seeking out interesting places off the beaten path.
Never without a project for long, in 2006 Richard and Judy moved to Centerville, Washington in search of the open skies and mountain views that never failed to bring him peace. Richard built a beautiful custom home on 20 acres with the commanding presence of Mt Adams and "the best side" of Mt. Hood. This was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream dating back to when Richard climbed, skied or backpacked into most all the Pacific Northwest’s mountains. Many an evening was spent on the deck of their dream home under the open sky, star-gazing at the Milky Way and identifying favorite constellations.
In response to Richard’s failing health, they moved to Dallesport in 2020 to be closer to services and health care professionals.
Richard felt a strong sense of service to his community, and in addition to his long support for his union, was also a member of the Sons of Norway’s Grieg Lodge in Portland and Mid-Columbia Car Club in The Dalles.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife Judy, daughter Trudi Traister & son-in-law Scott Bolton, son Matthew Traister, daughter Melissa Traister, grandson Oliver Traister, granddaughter Lillian Traister of the Portland area, and sister Irene Elsey of Port Angeles, Washington. Cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends will miss his bone-dry humor and laughing eyes. Until the end, only those eyes would give him away.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of Celilo Cancer Center in The Dalles who provided attentive, thoughtful care over the past 11 years during his treatment for MDS.
Organizations Richard and Judy support include the MDS Foundation, American Lung Association, Doctors without Borders, and Habitat for Humanity. "
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center • Celilo Chapel (204 E. 4th Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058). Visit www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com to leave a note of condolence for the family.

Delphine (Dee) Lucille Dillon

Delphine (Dee) Lucille Dillon was born February 8th, 1924 to Luther and Ole Vineyard in Miami, Oklahoma, where she attended school in Wyandot, Oklahoma, graduating in 1942.  Dee followed her parents to Hood River and married Glenn W. Taylor in 1946.  Their son, Glenn D, was born in 1950.  The couple divorced in 1966.  Dee worked for the Oregon Washington Telephone Company into the early 1970s.

Gary and Dee were married on November 28th, 1969 and made their home in Hood River.  It was with Pastor Kintner, of First Baptist Church, that Dee trusted Jesus Christ with her life.  As a result of entrusting Christ, she shared in multiple ministries at First Baptist working with young children and various children’s ministries.  She also served as both monitor and female counselor with Baptist Christian School into the late 1980s.  She spent long hours in ministering to students and families after hours, by making her home a place where that could be accomplished.

She has continued to serve in the church at Faith Bible Church, (formerly First Baptist Church), assisting the senior’s ministry by planning monthly fellowship activities; her favorite being the coast trips in June and October.  Both Dee and Gary enjoyed the coast and made numerous trips throughout the years.  Dee also made their home a most suitable environment for Bible studies and lunchtime meals for the senior group.

Church ministry was not her only involvement; she also served many years with the Hood River Sports Club leading pool exercise classes for general therapy and wellness.  She also assisted her son, Glenn D and Mark Moga with their respective chiropractic businesses in Hood River for a number of years.

Dee passed peacefully and was received into her Lord’s hands early September 3rd, 2021with Gary at her side.

Robert Leland (Bob) Gove

Robert Leland (Bob) Gove

Robert Leland (Bob) Gove of Mosier, Oregon went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 15th, 2021. He was born April 3rd, 1929 in Denver, Colorado to Leland Chase Gove and Bertha Evelyn Newman Gove. His Brother Dick Gove was born two years later. When Bob was 11 the family moved to The Dalles, Oregon where Leland worked in the shipyards. At Bob’s urging the family looked at a farm in Mosier in 1945 and bought 205 acres from Ben and Erma Veatch.

Bob loved taking care of the animals, gardening and working on the farm. He graduated from Mosier School, Salutatorian, in 1947.  After high school, he worked at Union Pacific Railroad and Pacific Telephone.

He married Marlys J. Yount on March 26, 1950. They lived for a time in Trout Lake, Washington where Bob worked on a dairy farm. They moved to the Skagit Valley and eventually settled in Redmond, Washington. They had four children; Janice Galbreath, Evelyn Hale, Victor Gove and Becky Jo Veatch. Bob worked in the telecommunication industry for many years and retired from General Telephone in Gresham around 1990.  Bob had a deep love for Jesus, his family and friends. He was the kindest man you could ever meet. He loved without judgment and he always put others before himself.

He also enjoyed writing, whether it be an essay, short story, or a “Bob” letter. They were meant to be encouragement and inspiration to those who received them. He was married to Marlys until her passing in 1988. He then met and married Verna Jean Everett in 1991 and gained 2 stepchildren, Sue and Brian and settled in Meridian, Idaho to be near her family. Bob and Verna Jean moved back to the Mid-Columbia area in 2018 where he was able to garden again and help his son on the farm in Mosier.

Bob leaves behind his wife, Verna Jean; three daughters; two stepchildren; grandchildren, Angela, Elijah, Benjamin and Jeremiah, Emmy, Mariah and Maddie as well as Verna Jean’s grandchildren; Nicole, Rebecca, Rachel and thirteen great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland & Bertha; brother, Dick; wife, Marlys; and son, Victor.
