Scenes from the Wasco County Fair Thursday, Aug. 15th; Rodeo tonight

Wasco County 4-H youths showed their animals on Thursday, Aug. 15. Left to right above are Lucinda Hertel, 13 of Dufur, Lily Parson-Stahler, 13, The Dalles, and Amerie Stahler, 13 of Dufur.

Lily is resting on her miniature heifer Valentine after the day’s activities. She has been raising the bovine since last September, and it paid off with a Reserve Champion honor in breeding beef. Excited? “Oh yeah,” she said, noting she spent two previous years raising Black Angus Cross. The three girls said they would be at the fair through Sunday and looked forward to the Rodeo tonight and Saturday. But they also noted they had barn duty to complete first.

The US Army set up this climbing wall for kids, and it proved quite popular as kids worked off some calories as they grabbed hand and foot holds on their way to the top.

Wasco County Fair Queen Tryouts were a crowd favorite on Thursday afternoon. Left to right - Alli Waine, 15, Audriyona Gilbert, 15 and Alina Franke, 14, wait beside the arena during the tryouts. Waine and Franke both had impressive rides before the judges and the grandstand. Gilbert, the current Wasco County Fair Queen, supported the girls as they demonstrated their riding skills.

Teddy Franke retrieves a hat for Alli Waine after she rode her horse through the arena during Wasco County Fair Queen tryouts on Thursday Afternoon. Alina Franke also made her mark in front of the grandstand in the tryouts.

Although temperatures were quite mild on Thursday, hanging in the 80s, that did not prevent kids from a water fight in the wash pens behind the goat barn.

Crowds got a good show from Godfrey the Magician as he spun his pizza pies on sticks and made away with this little chicken.

Shaved Ice tastes way better when you can ware it. These two were motoring all over the fair on their bikes after indulging on their Tygh Shave Ice. Flavor: Tiger’s Blood.

The old windmill - Wasco County has set up an arcade for youths off the main runway, said Commissioner Phil Brady. Games included miniature golf, basketball and an assortment of other challenges. It was drawing kids like hummingbirds to syrup.

The Wasco County Fair Rodeo starts tonight at 7:30 p.m. and it will be followed with a drone light show and then the Got Your Six Band cranks up at 10:15 p.m.
