The firefighters of Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue (MCFR), were not just waiting for the next call on March 5th. Instead, they were actively engaging in rigorous training exercises at Calvary Baptist Church on Columbia View Drive in The Dalles, to ensure their preparedness during a crisis.

Wasco County Commissioners declared April 2- 8, 2024 as dark sky week in Wasco County, in honor of International Dark Sky Week. The proclamation calls Oregon’s dark skies a “significant natural resource” and draws attention to the importance of mitigating light pollution.

Possibly the last chance to get free COVID-19 tests mailed to your home from the U.S. government is coming to an end later this week. This Friday, March 8, is the last day to order the free tests. The program is being suspended after Friday.

The Dalles High schoolers got half the day off of school on Feb 23 to accommodate TD’s Middle School Fly Up Day and some of those high schoolers chose to spend the day volunteering to better their community.

NAMI Gorge, the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is looking for a physical location to host a monthly support group for family and friends of those struggling with mental illness.

On March 13, 2024, the City of The Dalles and Wasco County will host a free Disaster Movie Marathon at Columbia Cinema, located at 2727 W 7th St. in The Dalles. Members of the public are invited to watch a variety of disaster-themed movies, enjoy free snacks, prizes and take part in a community survey on disaster prepardeness.

The Dalles Wasco County Public Library will host a “Treasure Island” community read this March 2024. Community members can pick up a free copy of the book and enjoy a month of pirate themed events celebrating Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel.

The Columbia Gorge Food Security Coalition sold out a free community screening of “Dolores”, an inspiring documentary that explores the life and legacy of Latina community organizer, labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Hood River Latino Network and the Rural Organizing Project received the keys to open up an Immigrant Help Center (IHC) at 1406 12th St, Suite 2, in Hood River, this week. The IHC will act as a community hub and wrap around service center. Programming will include cultural events, leadership skills development, and assistance navigating mental and health services.

This week Courtney Middleton, an English Language Development (ELD) teacher, assigned her 4th and 5th-grade students the task of writing persuasive letters on topics impacting today's youth.

American Queen Voyages has declared bankruptcy and canceled 20 plus stops in the City of The Dalles in the upcoming season. The cancellation could mean a $110,000+ loss in tourism dollars for The Dalles but locals are working to find solutions.

Progress is being made on the construction of a new 5,500 square foot commercial building at the intersection of Lone Pine Blvd and NE Lone Pine Blvd in The Dalles. The new structure sits kitty-corner from Water’s Edge and across the Street from McDonalds.  

After years of negotiations and a decades long court battle over dam operations, a historic partnership agreement has been signed by President Joe Biden, the Governors of Washington and Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Yakama, Umatilla, and Nez Perce, to restore wild salmon populations, expand clean energy production, and reinforce the economic benefits of the Columbia River system.

Revisions to the code laws were spurred by unresolved violations such as abandoned vehicles, some nearing a decade without resolution. But other property owners throughout the county are asking for clarifications, and revisions to ensure their property rights.
