Mosier Creek Fire update 8-17-20, afternoon

Jane Burke and Thor Horgenstad with the American Red Cross are assisting evacuees from the Mosier Creek Fire at the Shilo Inn in east The Dalles. There are still five residents awaiting to return to their homes. Evacuation levels were downgraded, but some roads still remain closed. The 985-acre fire is 65 percent contained, according to the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Museum opens on limited basis

Original Wasco County Courthouse is opening on a limited basis for the remainder of tourist season. The 1859 building at 410 West Second Place, The Dalles, welcomes visitors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday through September.

“Wondering why the firefighters hadn't arrived, I tried to call 911. No service.” “I got in my car and drove until I could get through to 911 and explain the situation. That's not exactly accurate. I kind of yelled that we needed help right away, that old people couldn't put out this fire, and that the helicopter needed to dump water closer to the house. The nice dispatcher said he'd send help. I think I was in a bit of a panic.”

Mixing in some pride

He had previously trimmed the tree seen here and also installed drip-line irrigation. He said they expected to add bark chips and flowers in days to come.
