Columbia Land Trust and Hood River Valley Parks and Rec. is set to hold a ribbon-cutting event on Earth Day, April 22, to celebrate a new half-mile section of the Indian Creek Trail in Hood River. Towards the southern end, there is a nice viewpoint overlooking the Hood River. The land the trail is on adjoins the 400-acre Powerdale Natural Area, which Columbia Land Trust stewards for fish and wildlife habitat, public recreation, and tribal fishing access.
The City of Maupin’s recent hire of Melissa Napoli as a community liaison was done in hopes to build relationships and increase the beauty of one of Oregon’s greatest outdoor gateways. Our Nancy Henderson recently sat down with Melissa to learn more about her and how she is offering olive branches while working to put a good face on the community that welcomes tens of thousands of visitors a summer.

Kim Hamberg with Gorge-Us-Greens offered tastings of microgreens at the Sunday Market in The Dalles at the 6th Street Station on March 26. These small clippings from cantaloupe, chard, and sunflowers were pretty tasty on a Sunday afternoon.
Happy International Forest Day from Columbia Community Connection News! We are proud to announce that we have planted 100 trees in celebration of International Forest Day this March 21st, 2023! The trees have been purchased through a donation to OneTreePlanted.org who will soon plant the trees in a deforested area of Oregon where they will play a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of the planet.

Wasco County has contracted with Hunden Strategic Partners, which is performing an economic and feasibility study for a new indoor and/or outdoor sports facility in The Dalles.
On Monday, March 13, The Dalles Art Center sent out an email letting members know that if $3,500 cannot be raised by March 31, the Board plans on moving ahead with “the painful responsibility of closing The Dalles Art Center by April 15th. This is a public appeal to all residents and businesses to help us avoid such a devastating loss to the community.”
Spring is quickly approaching! Underwood Conservation District is holding its annual TreeFest at Rheingarten Park in White Salmon on Saturday, March 18th, 2023 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 12:00 noon.
The first series will be held Mondays, 10am-noon at Rufus City Hall: March 20, March 27, April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24. The second series will be held Tuesdays, 6 pm-8 pm at the Sherman County Senior Center in Moro.

A recent call to the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the death of a Cougar kitten. Some locals are upset by latest “removal” but the sheriff’s office policy of hunting cougars with dogs remains intact.

Victorino Rodriguez beat the cold this morning, Feb. 24, as he lit off a long line of cherry wood pruned from McClaskey Orchards next to Highway 197 just south of Auction Sales Company in The Dalles. The 39-year-old from The Dalles warms his back here in this photo. He originally hails from the state of Durango, Mexico, where average temperatures range in the 70s during the day and the 30s at night in February. A “last-minute” rule change to Oregon’s Fish Passage Law has environmentalists, Tribes and fishers concerned.
The Dalles City Council will hear more about the recent purchase of the Oregon Motor Motel and plans for it to be converted to transitional housing for houseless people living in The Dalles. Mid-Columbia Community Action Council Exec. Director Kenny LaPoint will provide information on Project Turnkey 2.0 at their regular meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. tonight, Monday, Feb. 13. The meeting will be held at City Hall, 313 Court Street.
