Dufur High School 2021 Scholarship Recipients

Clang… Clang… Clang… Clang… Clang… Clang… That noise emanating from downtown The Dalles is the sound of progress as the City of The Dalles is replacing about 1,000 feet of sewer line just west of Union Street and Hattenhauer Distributors.

Taylor Morehouse topped 14 feet in the pole vault to take state gold at the 5A state track meet this past Friday and Saturday, May 21st-May 22nd. He was among 3 athletes that took top 3 in their events. Overall, The Dalles High School had 11 students make it to state. They represented The Dalles really well and most PR’d. Morehouse’s phenomenal vault has led him to be the first state champion at TDHS since 2010.

Four OHSU cardiologists are set to discontinue practicing in The Dalles after an agreement between MCMC and OHSU was abruptly ended earlier this month. Neither MCMC CEO Dennis Knox nor OHSU gave a definitive reason for the discontinuation of service. But the results of the decision are clear. Cardiologists are leaving.

2021 TDHS State Track Meet Preview

In recent days Susan Gabay has made a $200,000 donation to an effort to put a mental health center at The Dalles High School. She wants there to be something that helps kids and families of kids with mental illness to have a safe place to go.

Shannon and Jonathon Zilka have had a tough couple of weeks. They have been working on flavors for their new ice cream shop, Shannon’s Ice Cream, at 318 E. Fourth Street in The Dalles. They’re set to open officially on Saturday, May 22, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Fun and learning delivered! Play & Learn is giving away free arts and craft supplies and bilingual activity boxes to families in Wasco, Hood River, Sherman, Gilliam, and Wheeler Counties to help parents and kids fill their time with fun and educational activities.

Tuesday’s election brought a tight race for the Port of The Dalles Position 3 as John Willer and Marcus Swift squared off. Races for Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation as well as the D21 board also had some interesting outcomes. Read more here.

Dufur Lady Rangers Go 5-5 In Inaugural Season

It’s not a typical high school project, but little is at Riverbend Community School on the Columbia Gorge Community College Campus. “We get to do projects and work with our hands,” said Blake Darr of the landscape project. “It’s a lot better than reading textbooks all day.”

The Dalles High School basketball season starts next week. I got to talk to the coaches of the men’s and women’s teams today. They gave me a small rundown on their teams and season this year.

Sluggers Give Their Moms the Best Gift: A Championship

Ceramics as well as throwing a little clay will be happening at The Dalles Art Center this Saturday, May 15 as the gallery showcases its market of incredible pieces brought about by a collaboration of local and regional artists. As expected, five local artists were included in Beyond the Construct: Penny Wallace, Yvonne Wakefield, Savannah Lawton, Tom Bottman, and Jonathan Kranzley. The Dalles High School’s track team will be attending districts this weekend. In past years the team would bring their varsity team to districts. Their Varsity team is the top 3 athletes at each event and the rest is Junior Varsity. But with sports and the season being complicated because of COVID-19, they’re bringing the whole team. It’s more about giving the kids a good opportunity to get better and make some new PR’s.
