Abstract artists wrought from the isolation and uncertainty of the early days of the COVID pandemic continue their path of creativity and are sharing their works with the public at the Hood River Library this month at 502 State Street.

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council (MCCAC) is pleased to announce that we are now scheduling appointments for all household types for the December 1, 2023 opening date of our Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The Pacific Northwest Region of the Forest Service will waive most day-use fee sites on National Forests in the region on Veterans Day, November 11. This fee-free day is in recognition of our nation's veterans and is the last fee-free day for the USDA Forest Service in 2023.

Oregon and Washington drivers face some of the nation's most perilous road conditions, with new research pinpointing Washington ranks third in the nation for fatal crashes during bad weather, and has the highest rate of accidents involving 'other' adverse conditions. Oregon has the sixth-highest rate of weather-related driving fatalities in the country.

Sense of Place will feature Beaver Power: Teaming Up with Nature’s Engineers to Restore Our Watersheds on November, 15th, 2023. This event will be offered in person at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, Oregon, and via livestream. 

In a collaborative effort, the Hood River County Sheriff's Office, along with several other law enforcement agencies, conducted a sting operation to lure child predators in Cascade Locks on October 21, 2023, leading to the apprehension of two suspects.

Earlier today a car hit a pole at approx. 2719 Skyline Rd. The good news is we're told the driver is ok. The bad news is the pole is not going to survive. The crew is responding and getting geared up to take an outage to replace the pole. There will be 23 total meters affected.

Reading is a critical skill for helping kids start, and stay, on a path to success in school and beyond. Across Oregon, students in early grades are still behind in reading skills as a result of the pandemic, which is a concern not only for educators and parents but for the entire community.

The Dalles man was found lying on his bicycle in Hood River in the 1800 block of Wasco Street in Hood River on Oct. 8th at around 2:30 p.m. 

The Good River Wellness Center is hosting a grand opening on Saturday, October 21st. Founded by Tucker Meager, ND., and healer Mary Magdalena with the dream of establishing a community of healers. Together they are creating a wellness-based health assurance membership plan that gives its members access to a curated group of wellness professionals throughout the gorge. 

Mt. Hood National Forest fire personnel plan to begin burning piles of slash this fall season. If weather and moisture levels remain favorable, pile-burning operations could begin as early as October 16 and continue through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Autumn has made it to the gorge and with the crisp fresh air, a record-breaking fall run of chinook salmon has made its presence known. Fishermen and women from the area have descended on the Columbia River for their chance at catching a “king”. It is a sight to be seen, our picturesque backyard filled with fishing boats.

The Sandy River Delta parking lot will be closed for re-striping during the mornings of Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 11 and 12. These dates are subject to change depending on the weather.

Rep. Jeff Helfrich of Hood River was elected the new house leader on Tuesday, Sept. 26, replacing Rep. Vikki Breese-Iverson of Prineville, who announced last week that she was stepping down from the role.

Mid-Columbia Center for Living (MCCFL), which provides a state-certified Community Mental Health Program on behalf of Wasco, Hood River, and Sherman Counties has temporarily scaled back its crisis services due to the statewide staffing shortage.

The Hood River City Council met on Sept. 25 to discuss a number of important issues facing the City including public art, an update on the Rand Road affordable housing development, Nature's Way Vista subdivision, and potentially updating City Policy to allow Uber and Lyft.

The first-degree attempted assault convictions relate back to the four gunshots he took at a vehicle during what appears to be a road rage incident that occurred near Parkdale on Halloween, 2022.
