In grand tradition, Mt. Hood Meadows held its 2023 Pond Skim contest where water from the snow melt is collected at the bottom of the hill and snowboarders and skiers attempt to hydroplane across the pond after a quick run down the hill. Columbia High School hosted a Career Day for high school students from White Salmon and the surrounding area to further their knowledge of careers available to them in their region on April 26th, 2023.

The Rodger Schock Community Organ will be introduced at a free concert open to all, featuring several acclaimed musicians, on Saturday, May 13 at 7 p.m. Prior to the concert, the community is also invited to purchase a ticket to a dinner in Riverside’s Riverview Room, prepared by Chef Kathy Watson and the Riverside kitchen team.

The raffle to support students in The Dalles and Hood River is aiming to put someone in a new car while local communities pay it forward for sports and extra-curricular activities at high schools in TD and HR. Tickets are $10 for a chance to win a new ‘23 Toyota Corolla. The raffle has the potential to bring $150k.

Members of the Wahtonka-Amotan Chapter of the National Honor Society caught a break last week as the weather showed up for their service at St. Peter’s Landmark in The Dalles. Members helped clear weeds and generally tidy up the landscape at the site.

The Dalles Wasco County Library has recently installed a short story dispenser on their main floor near the entrance. The interactive installation is a new innovative way to promote literacy and community involvement, allowing people to contribute their own stories and share them with others.

On Saturday, April 15th, Mid-Columbia Housing Authority, Columbia Cascade Housing Corporation, Columbia Gorge Food Bank and OSU Extension Service will come together with support from GOOGLE to build raised garden beds for Families at Heritage Heights Apartments in The Dalles,

Local Bilingual Family Liaison, Julie Zapien, successfully organized a community fun run and taco feed event centered around celebrating Cesar. E. Chavez and bolstering Latin(e) family engagement at Colonel Wright School in The Dalles, OR. last March.

A local group of citizens has launched a campaign in a bid to gain community support around building a new high school in The Dalles. The events this weekend and website launch, VoteYESTDHS.org is an initiative of the Political Action Committee, North Wasco Strong Community Schools, and aims to build advocacy and rally community support around the goal for a new high school initiative.

People often come in and they’re very anxious and we are able to set their fears to rest. We have an absolutely no shame, no judgment zone. It’s just about their health and public health and safety and we just want everybody to get care, said Hanlon Wilde.

Columbia Land Trust and Hood River Valley Parks and Rec. is set to hold a ribbon-cutting event on Earth Day, April 22, to celebrate a new half-mile section of the Indian Creek Trail in Hood River. Towards the southern end, there is a nice viewpoint overlooking the Hood River. The land the trail is on adjoins the 400-acre Powerdale Natural Area, which Columbia Land Trust stewards for fish and wildlife habitat, public recreation, and tribal fishing access.

The Oregon Historical Society (OHS) is proud to host a free public program on Saturday, April 15, where scholars and community leaders will discuss the history of the Yasui Brothers’ Store in Hood River. The program will take place at 2 pm at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River and will be followed by a casual reception with light refreshments.

Lake Taco, a family owned Mexican restaurant in Hood River has re-opened in their new location and is doing better than ever, thanks to the gorge community rallying to raise over $48,000 in support of this local family and their made-fresh food.

A dozen teens and half as many adults from Hood River and The Dalles spent spring break in Costa Rica, working on a conservation project, learning about cacao and coffee production, coming face to face with wildlife, using their Spanish skills, and enjoying the beauty and hospitality of this Central American country.
