The Dalles Riverhawks volleyball team is a special team this year. They have 6 returning varsity players this year who are very talented. With a new coaching staff and record-high 4 teams, the future looks great for the Hawks.

Here at The Dalles Public Library, our 2021 Summer Reading program was very successful. We had 384 people of all ages sign-up through the Beanstack app. Those aged 0-4 were keeping track of the books read, or read to them; there was a staggering 3,132 books read. Every Fall sport started practice for the 2021 season last week. Girls soccer is one of them and it’s a team a lot of us are looking forward to watching. The Hawks had a winning season last year and in the league playoffs, lost in heartbreaking fashion to rival Hood River Valley in 2nd overtime.

The sound of African marimba is coming to the Gorge, along with the music of Mexico, Eastern Europe, Japan and other far-flung locations, as the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents Music from the Global Village, a new monthly music series.

Students across The Dalles returned to almost regular School today, Monday, Aug. 30 as classes are meeting in full and teachers and staff are now instructing in person. It has been about 18 months since this has been possible, due to the pandemic.

The Navigation Center will serve as a comprehensive resource center for low-income community members and those experiencing houselessness in the Mid-Columbia region and become the new permanent location of The Dalles tiny home shelters.

The Dalles Kiwanis Club has decided to cancel this year’s Steak Feed fundraiser out of the utmost care and concern for its beloved community’s health and well-being. The event was initially scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 9.

The Fire Boss and their pilots are giving firefighters a strategic advantage as the converted crop dusters can quickly respond and pummel flames through scooping water on the Columbia River. They are quickly becoming a fan favorite for government agencies looking to out blazes before they get too big.

“We’ve had a great first day of school,” said Ann Varkados, Lyle School District Superintendent. “Kids are excited to be there and teachers are excited. We’re looking forward to having kids in class every day.”

Locally, Coastal Farm & Ranch in The Dalles has put up signs warning that its ivermectin products are for animal use only. The sign says, in part, “Despite media reports that Ivermectin could potentially be used to treat people with Covid-19, these products are not safe and are not approved for humans.”
