TD Kiwanis October Programs focus on housing, houseless issues

Mt. Adams Institute will host a unique Sense of Place event, Bloodsucker, Eel, Asum, Ksuyas, Parasite, Lamprey: Many Names, but What Does it Mean to Us? October 19, 2022. The presentation, by Ralph Lampman, which includes live lamprey, will be offered in-person at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, Oregon, and via livestream.

Several local businesses in the Columbia River Gorge got a special delivery on October 5th, 2022. Travel Oregon, and local tourism leadership hand delivered bags of cookies with thank you notes attached to tourism oriented businesses across the region. Their visit highlighted both the successes and struggles of the Mt. Hood and Columbia River Gorge’s tourism industry.

The sewage flowing into the City’s wastewater treatment plant has high levels of fats, oils and grease which is causing problems with treating the wastewater prior to discharge to the Columbia River. These problems may lead to violations of water quality standards and pollution of the river resulting in closures of local beaches. The City could be fined by the State for violations.

The strength of black market fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, has resulted in multiple overdoses and deaths this year in The Dalles. Another suspected case involving a 30-year-old woman occurred just on Monday, Oct. 3, near The Dalles Library. “She probably left 60 years on the table,” said The Dalles Police Chief Tom Worthy.

Jarabe, which translates to “concoction,” highlights the eclectic mix of genres Jarebe Mexicano perform ranging from Mexican Folk, Rock & Roll, and Norteño/Tex-Mex to Latin Rock, Trío Romántico, and popular Cumbia. Fires ended her hiking journey on Monday as the last 30 miles of the trail remained closed. But she was not to be deterred. She and hiker friend Sandals rented a canoe and are paddling the last 22 miles via Ross Lake.

It proves a film does not need to do away with jaw-dropping action sequences and classic movie structures to make a film that is not only extremely entertaining but emotional and thought-provoking. The epic film centers on an all-female group of warriors, the Agojie, in 19th century Africa, as they defend their homeland from rival kingdoms funded by slave traders.

The free Covid-19 vaccine clinic in front of La Michoacana in The Dalles on Kelly Avenue was hopping with happy patients seeking the new Omicron inclusive booster today, Sept. 30. The vibe at the clinic was very fun and upbeat compared to a typical hospital setting. “That was the most fun shot I’ve had in a while,” said Phil Brady, Wasco County Commissioner who got boosted at the clinic this afternoon.

The City of The Dalles has removed the ‘no water contact’ signs along Mill Creek and the Columbia River on Thursday, Sept. 29. after water tests showed the water had returned to normal conditions. Vandals blocked a sewerage pipe and it was discovered on Friday, Sept. 23. Human waste, urine and feces had been spilling into the creek.

The Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC) has officially ended Perennial Power Holdings, Inc.’s efforts to build a 415-megawatt fracked gas power plant near the Columbia River in western Umatilla County.
