Life is in the details. And this week’s column by Sarah Cook calls out many of those in our own backyard. It’s easy to get tunnel vision and want to just get from A to B. But Cook shows us, if you take your foot off the gas for a moment, and grab a local guide app, there is some pretty cool stuff we walk past in TD without even noticing.

Jarabe, which translates to “concoction,” highlights the eclectic mix of genres Jarebe Mexicano perform ranging from Mexican Folk, Rock & Roll, and Norteño/Tex-Mex to Latin Rock, Trío Romántico, and popular Cumbia. They hit the stage on Thursday, Oct. 6 at The Dalles Civic. They’re not just musicians but educators and ambassadors of culture and a ton of fun.

It proves a film does not need to do away with jaw-dropping action sequences and classic movie structures to make a film that is not only extremely entertaining but emotional and thought-provoking. The epic film centers on an all-female group of warriors, the Agojie, in 19th century Africa, as they defend their homeland from rival kingdoms funded by slave traders.

Serious Theater in partnership with the Wasco County Cultural Trust Coalition will bring art and music together for a free public event happening on Sunday, October 2 at 2:00 P.M at Zion Lutheran Church in The Dalles.

Teen leaders will gain professional and social-emotional learning (SEL) skills through a career-connected service learning project incorporating VEX robotics and STEAM maker activities. The focus of the grant is to provide youth with increased access to engineering and computer science career exploration supported by paid community teen leaders.

The History Museum of Hood River County is proud to present Cemetery Tales 2022, featuring people who lived in Hood River County and the Gorge and were connected to music. I met my scalper, Kiwanian Dennis Morgan, in the parking lot. He set me up with two delightful tickets for my wife Peggy and myself with seating, well, anywhere we wanted. It appeared the crowd was prepared for the event, many bringing their own steak knives. Many opted for Orange Soda and a chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Oh wait, that was me.

A new fiesta, El Grito, will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month on the Washington side of the Gorge on Sunday, September 18, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Rhinegarten Park in White Salmon. Admission is free, and the event is open to all.

The elusive Hood River based fine artist Craig Luster, who has been making art in the Gorge for over forty years, has come out of the studio for the first time in years to host an art show featuring his latest body of work inspired by the #MeToo movement at Old St. Peter’s Landmark at 405 Lincoln St on September 2nd and 3rd from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m!

The Dalles First Friday events will be in full swing on Sept. 2 as local merchants find ways to give back to local schools and stay open until 8 p.m. Kaahreena Ochoco will hit her four-month mark at the event and will be giving to kindergarten teacher Courtney Middleton, while showing off her resale and consignment store, Per Diem Thrifts.
