The Hood River-White Salmon Bridge Authority board of commissioners on Thursday approved the project team to take the next step in securing a company to lead the design and construction of the new bridge.
Now in its 14th season, the popular Sense of Place series has announced the launch of Sense of Place Pop-Ups. These events will bring the unique Sense of Place programs to locations throughout the Gorge, beginning with a Pop-Up at The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center on March 21, 2024, with wildlife biologist, Dr. Jocelyn Akins.
“New this year, we’re excited to present the workshop, “An Introduction to Popular Education”. This is a 4-hour overview of the history of Popular Education. Come see why The Next Door has adopted this teaching method and learn facilitation skills you can use in your meetings, classroom, community events, and more. “Give for the Gorge was created to help ensure that the Columbia River Gorge and its communities are preserved for future generations of visitors and residents,” said founder and project manager, Sandi Scheinberg. “It will provide a much-needed, ongoing source of funding to eight incredible Gorge-area nonprofits focused on the three areas of greatest need in the Gorge: housing, food security and the environment.”
The Hood River City Council agreed unanimously to place a resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza on an upcoming agenda for consideration and public testimony. Hood River ministers Rev. Vicky Stifter and Rev. John Boonstra, representing an interfaith coalition, urged the council to endorse the resolution. "Peace must be built on trust and love for humanity without any conditions, where enemies will learn to live side by side," added Houssein Salman after the Feb. 12 City Council meeting. "We must stand for what is right for every country to live in peace without persecution, death, or destruction."
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Columbia River Gorge including the cities of The Dalles, Dufur, Maupin, Hood River, Underwood, Stevenson, Carson, Corbett, and Cascade Locks. The warning remains in effect from 8 a.m. on February 14 until 10 p.m. on Thursday the 15th. A weather advisory has also been issued for the Simcoe Highlands from Feb. 14-16.
The Port of Hood River’s engineering team is continuing to troubleshoot the lift failure that occurred in December, resulting in some temporary closures.
Each year, the Mid Columbia Health Foundation’s (MCHF) Women’s Giving Circle, donates their dues to local nonprofits. The Columbia Gorge Resolution Center is asking citizens to sign a letter of support that will be presented during an upcoming legislative short session in which Wasco County and Mid-Columbia Center for Living will request $36.1 million in funding to build a 16-bed secure mental and behavioral health residential treatment facility (SRTF) and stabilization center on 10th and Walnut in The Dalles, OR.

Around 12% of adolescents report being a victim of physical violence in their dating relationships, according to WhiteHouse.gov, highlighting why it is important for youth to understand how setting boundaries early on can be a great start to a healthy relationship.
The annual PIT Count is a federally mandated survey of people experiencing houselessness in communities across the country. The count, which occurs in late January of every year, plays a critical role in determining the level of state and federal funding communities receive to address houselessness. It also provides key insight into the needs of those impacted by houselessness.
As the Bridge of the Gods reaches its 98th year in service connecting the Oregon community of Cascade Locks with Stevenson and North Bonneville in Washington, the Port of Cascade Locks is thinking about its future. Despite its age, the bridge is in good working order and not in need of a full replacement like the Hood River Bridge and the I-5 Interstate Bridge. However, as with any aging piece of infrastructure, the bridge would benefit from a few key upgrades to improve safety and resilience and extend its usable life.
The Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District is hoping to put a five-year levy on the ballot in May of 2024. The levy would pay to build a new aquatic center, develop Westside Park, and purchase Parkdale Park. But first, they need to secure land for a new aquatic center.
