At the council's Sept. 23 meeting on Monday, Mays recognized the graduates of the city's local government academy. Sorosis Park Playground Closure: New Installation on the Horizon

Work will begin soon to replace the existing Tree Top Playground at Sorosis Park in The Dalles. The last day for public access to the playground is Wednesday, September 25. On Thursday, September 26, temporary fencing will be installed around the perimeter of the playground site to promote safety and limit access to the site.

Studies show that children who learn to read early have a much more likely chance of achieving greater success in their later education as well as in the workforce. Local nonprofit Books for Kids Columbia Gorge is on a mission to increase education equity by providing children in Hood River, Wasco, Klickitat, and Skamania Counties with books to keep as their own and is now embarking on a goal to raise $15,000.

Shaniko Shooter gets 10 years in prison after firing on Wasco County Sgt.

Cantwell led a high-speed chase after fleeing detention during a traffic stop near Shaniko in 2021.  After one of Cantwell’s tires blew out, Sergeant Matt Tuia pulled his patrol vehicle in behind Cantwell’s vehicle along the highway.  Cantwell got out of his vehicle and fired multiple rounds at Tuia, striking the driver’s side of the windshield and the hood of Sergeant Tuia’s vehicle. One of the rounds barely missed striking Tuia’s left side.
