The Dalles Public Library’s first week of December is packed with hands-on creativity, holiday fun and learning, including crafting workshops, gaming, storytime, a Bob Ross–style painting class and a free screening of the holiday classic “Home Alone.”

There were webs, cider, and plenty of giggles at The Dalles Public Library on Tuesday afternoon as kids and parents came together for “Cider & Spiders,” a fall-themed craft and storytime that celebrated all things creepy-crawly.

From a family talent showcase and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony to spooky crafts inspired by Sleepy Hollow, the library is full of ways to learn, laugh, and celebrate the season together.

For more than two years, retired lawyers and other volunteers have been helping Gorge residents apply for expungement (or “set aside”) of their Oregon criminal records. The volunteers operate free walk-in clinics twice a month in The Dalles and Hood River. More than 220 people have sought help through the clinics since June 2023. Most who come to the clinics live in the Gorge, but the clinics are open to anyone who needs help.

The Children’s Wing of The Dalles Public Library was packed Monday afternoon as families gathered to watch The Reluctant Dragon, a spring break puppet performance presented by Dragon Theater.

The silence of the library was shattered. Pages once meant for quiet study became the backdrop of a warzone. The rules of engagement? Simple. Work as a team or go rogue. But in the end, it was every kid for themselves.

The Dalles Public Library transformed into a royal palace on Friday, Jan. 3, as children dressed as princes and princesses attended a lively tea party fit for nobility.
