For the fourth year in a row, the North Wasco County Education Foundation solicited nominations for their Golden Apple Awards. These awards recognize excellent teachers and other staff in the North Wasco County School District. The program was created to incentivize excellence and honor outstanding staff.

While the national Braver Angels organization was established in 2016, the Columbia Gorge Alliance of Braver Angels is celebrating its first year of operation in July of 2024. Wasco County posts Certified Primary Election results; Runoff for Commissioner seat
There will be a runoff between Jeff Justesen and Brian Lauterbach in the fall for the Wasco County Commissioner seat — 200 votes separated the candidates in the primary. Justesen garnered 1878 and Lauterbach, 1678. The general election is Nov. 7.

Urban Renewal Explores Incentives to Stimulate Middle Housing Construction in Hood River
The Hood River Urban Renewal District heard a staff presentation on a Middle Housing Incentive Concept proposal that would encourage developers to construct more “middle housing” in Hood River. Middle housing refers to medium-density housing options such as single family homes, cottage clusters and multi-family homes like duplexes, triplexes and quadruplexes.

Commissioners to Transfer Oversight of Klickitat County Jail; Songer Objects
Klickitat County Commissioners have decided to form a new County Department of Corrections which would oversee operational changes and improvement to Klickitat County Jail. Including appointments of a Jail Administrator to run and operate the jail and the establishment of a medical clinic on site. The new Jail Administrator will report directly to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). Klickitat County Sheriff Bob Songer has opposed the decision.

The Hood River Latino Network (HRLN) is set to celebrate the grand opening of the new Immigrant Help Center on Saturday, June 15th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1406 12th St. Suite 102 in Hood River.
The Chronicle Building Nears Completion and Hoping for a June Opening
The new owners of The Chronicle Building are nearing the completion of their remodeling efforts and are hopeful for a June opening if everything goes according to plan. Bets Stelzer, one of the owners and the CEO of FarmStand, an organic and non-GMO food store and deli based in Hood River is set to occupy a portion of the building.
Structure Fire at Celilo Inn in The Dalles
Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue (MCFR) received a call at around 11:07 a.m. of a structure fire at Celilo Inn. According to MCFR Chief Bob Palmer, the fire started in a room in the middle of the complex on the upper floor.
